Contemporary Renovation Turns Family Home into a Haven in Haworth, NJ
We love renovating dated homes, because they have great bones, but some have really awkward layouts. Our clients wanted to overcome the awkward in there house by redesigning the entire first floor layout, while maintaining a safe open space for their young children to grow and play. The new home design was inspired with their growing family in mind, and features spaces every member of the family can grow into.
An unfinished basement officially becomes part of the home as we reworked its layout, giving it purpose and function. While upstairs, a light, beach inspired color palette filled with hues of blue and gray creates a tranquil, calming contemporary feel. We mixed modern elements with farmhouse furniture pieces, creating an entirely new home filled with personality and charm.
SADDLE RIVER, New Jersey
White dominates the color palette of the kitchen design, giving a clean and contemporary update to an originally dark and dreary space. We took walls down to create an open concept space for many different family activities. The furniture is carefully designed and placed around low pendants that help define each space, while not reducing site lines and the open feel. Soft fabrics were chosen with cleanability in mind, while subtle silver accents and pops of color are present throughout that unify the overall space.
Why not add a touch of glamour to the small spaces you visit every day? Our vote will always be, “Yes!” Custom cabinetry is perfect for functional storage in small spaces like this white kitchen pantry, and a built in wine fridge doesn’t hurt either.
The interior design of this open family room was inspired by Saturday mornings. While mom is making breakfast in the kitchen area, the kids are watching cartoons. Conversation is quite comfortable, yet a cozy sectional provides separation and independence. Lightweight furniture pieces make for easy cleaning and reworking the layout for fun activities. An elegantly gray washed wood matches the warm grays of the walls, while rich blue hues make the space feel cozy. A modern fireplace design gives a touch of minimalism and glam. It is the perfect touch to marry everything together.
The innovative formal living room design allows for conventional functions, as well as some new ones. Traditional built ins are refinished in a darker gray, while timeless accent chairs are given a fun pattern for a refreshed look. A round cocktail table is carefully chosen to match the chairs and centralize the area. Adding an area rug with a darker tone grounds the space and gives contrast to the beautiful fine details.
This basement was completely finished from top to bottom. We kept the color palette somewhat light, and added pops of color through the pillows and décor. Our clients wanted an informal gathering space where the whole family can be together. The entire renovated basement remains open, and activity areas are created with furniture pieces and accents.
A contemporary paneled accent wall paired with a steel stair rail sets the beginning tones of the space. Our inspiration for the color palette came from a beautiful pool table in rich dark wood. The eat in bar area is finished in an identical wood, and features a wine cooler, warm under cabinet lighting, and a glamorous quartz countertop with a hint of sparkle. It creates the perfect ambiance for movie nights in the new viewing seating area. Casings and molding were paid special attention to, adding warmth and a sense of luxury to an often forgotten space.
Not only do we want to tend to our client’s needs, but their children’s, too! We created a haven for their children to grow into. The kids area of the finished basement design features an arts and crafts space, homework area, and endless amounts of custom creative storage.
